There are many conditions owing to nerve injury for which rehabilitation can improve functionality and quality of life. Some of these nerve injuries are brachial plexus injury, peripheral nerve injury, axonotmesis, neurotmesis, holstein lewis fracture among others. Nerves may have inflammation and lead to nerve palsy conditions like saturday night palsy, radial nerve palsy, ulnar nerve palsy, tardy ulnar nerve palsy etc. One may have to deal with pinched nerves leading to a variety of conditions like sciatic nerve pain, ulnar nerve impingement, femoral nerve impingement and brachial plexus impingement.
All these different nerve injuries lead to nerve weakness, pain and muscular weakness – a common set of symptoms of damaged nerves, the location of which will vary based on the nerve involved. In case of a nerve injury, you may even experience muscular weakness, tingling, numbness or a total loss of feeling in a limb. It’s important to treat peripheral nerve injuries early.
Causes of Nerve Injury
Peripheral nerves can be damaged in several ways:
- Injury or an accident, a fall or stretch, compress, crush or cut nerves during a sport
- Medical conditions, such as diabetes, Guillain-Barre syndrome and carpal tunnel syndrome
- Autoimmune diseases including lupus, rheumatoid arthritis and Sjogren’s syndrome
- Other causes include narrowing of the arteries, hormonal imbalances and tumors
Nerve Injury Treatment & Neuro Rehabilitation
Whether it is peripheral neuropathy or any other type of nerve injury, you may require treatment to help manage other symptoms in addition to treating pain.
ReAble Neuro Rehabilitation helps patients with nerve injuries and neuro conditions:
- Bring pain relief and pain control
- Maintain or improve mobility as much as possible
- Relearn fine motor skills
- Participate in exercises appropriate to their diagnosis
- Develop strategies to make daily life safer and easier
- Learn how to use adaptive equipment, assistive technologies (if and when required)
- Ensure nutrient-rich diet as appropriate to their diagnosis
- Manage the emotional challenges of their diagnosis
For example, if you have muscle weakness, you may need physiotherapy to learn exercises to improve your muscle strength. You may also need occupational therapy guidance to wear splints to support weak ankles or use walking aids to help you get around.
Like with all of our rehab programs, we work with the patient and family to create a customized rehab program to efficiently achieve the goals identified by them.
