ReAble Neuro Rehabilitation recognises that occupational therapy holds a pivotal role in the treatment of an individual with brain injury, spinal cord injury or has been through a prolonged neurological illness specially related with brain stroke and paralysis. Using occupational therapy for neurological rehabilitation will enable the patient and his/her family to add independence to their daily life (activities of daily living – ADLs)
What is Occupational Therapy?
OT or Occupational Therapy is a branch of health care that helps people of all ages who have physical, sensory, or cognitive problems, says the World Federation of Occupational Therapists. Occupational therapy (OT) teaches you how to adapt. Occupational therapists are experts in adapting and grading activities and environments to help remove barriers and facilitate full participation in daily life. This type of treatment can help if you have pain, injury, illness, or a disability that makes it hard for you to care for yourself, move around, complete household chores, do your job or take part in activities. They will also teach you how to use tools (assistive devices) if you need them.
At ReAble, we believe occupational therapy is an essential part of your recovery and work with some of the best OT’s for your rehabilitation.
Our occupational therapy practitioners utilize a holistic approach where the focus is on adapting the environment and/or task for each client. In all our settings, the client, family, and care team are an integral part of the plan. The holistic approach utilized by our occupational therapy practitioners enables clients of all ages to live life to the fullest along with promoting health.
Occupational Therapy Activities
Activities that really make a difference through Occupational Therapy are those that combine creativity with proven techniques. Occupational therapist can help you do specific things like eat without help from others, take part in leisure activities, do office work, bathe and get dressed, do laundry or clean up around the house.
Within ReAble’s comprehensive neuro rehabilitation plan of care, occupational therapy services work hand in hand with other specialists like physiotherapy and will include:
- An individualized evaluation, during which the client and/or family along with the occupational therapist determine the client’s goals.
- Self-care training in co-ordination with physiotherapist – eating, bathing, dressing, and grooming
- Development of adaptive strategies for daily activities.
- Customized interventions to improve the client’s ability to perform daily activities and reach the goals established.
Occupational Therapy at Home
Because occupational therapy centers around everyday life, it is a natural, excellent option to practice occupational therapy at home. In short, the therapist looks at how you do any kind of activity or task. Then they come up with most relevant, customized, timely and goal- oriented rehabilitation programs to improve the way you do it, to make it easier or less painful.
In consultation with the occupational therapist, physiotherapist will help you within your home setting to:
- Build fine motor skills. This might include picking things up with tweezers, grasp a pen, teach you new ways to button a shirt, tie your shoes.
- Perform Exercises to improve gross motor skills. Teach you easier ways to get in and out of the shower, or help older adults to prevent falls in their home or in public areas.
- Improve motor planning. Therapist might work on daily routines like getting dressed.
- Treat adults who’ve had a stroke to improve balance, change their home to prevent injuries, build muscle strength, or adapt to their memory or speech problems.
With this collaborative approach of ReAble, by keeping pace with the world-class standards, your team of professional therapists ensures that the rehabilitation is always focused towards practical improvements and recovery of the patient.
